Quick Hit Race Review: X Warrior Challenge Black-Ops 2019

I already wrote up my more in-depth review in two parts (Part 1, Part 2) so take a look at those for more detail but I also wanted to get this review up mostly for the scorecard.

Location:  Boneyard OCR Compound, Barrhead, Alberta

Weather: The day was hot but it had cooled down quite a bit by the time the race started. We had a short but intense burst of rain for about 10 minutes about 2 hours but other than that it was perfect for the race. Even the overnight weather was good as it wasn’t too cold.

Festival Area: There was no festival area just a tent city for all the racers. There was a merchandise tent that also sold food in case you had forgotten to bring anything. There was also a grill selling food that also had microwaves and hot water for the racers to use.

Course Conditions: Was a complete mix of everything over 8 kilometers. There was a bog, hard fast terrain, muddy hills and even some single-track grass trails.

Course Layout: 26 obstacles over 8k’s. The first third of the course was mostly open running with only a few obstacles. The middle third was the grip intense section and the final third was kind of the strength section. The penalty loop was sandwiched between the last two obstacles as the final obstacle was a mandatory wall.

Favorite Obstacle: Not really sure on this one to be honest as there wasn’t one obstacle that stood out above the rest as I enjoyed most of them. I think I’ll go with the Slant Rig as I was challenged to finish it each lap but still managed to do it.

Favorite Aspect: When the sun came up during my heavy lap I felt invincible knowing I had conquered my goal even though I still had some distance to finish.

Race Synopsis: This was the toughest test I’ve ever put myself through. There were parts I felt amazing and a time where I just needed to have a nap and eat. I also so felt in some aspects I totally was prepared for the challenge and in other ways I underestimated a 12-hour race. I would like to take this challenge on again maybe in 2021 as I think I want to take a year of focusing on another event as my ‘A’ race for next year.

Total Penalties: 12 Penalty Loops

I failed the same damn 5 obstacles on each of my 3 open obstacles laps but you max out at 4 penalties. The problems for me were the rings, high rig, low rig, peg wall and the axe throw. The first 4 are pretty typical for me as they’re grip intensive while the axe was frustrating as I hit the target all the three times but with too much force as I took chunks out of the target each time.

I’m not scoring the course marking as I feel like the places where it was sparse that was part of the challenge of running overnight with headlamps, so I don’t think it would be fair to criticize that.

Biggest Critique: I’m going to write an opinion piece in the next bit on the changes I would make if I ran this event so I don’t want to give too much away. But I will say the rules of qualifying as a true ‘Finisher’ for a 12-hour race are far too easy to achieve.

Lessons Learnt:

  • Bring more food for prerace as the tent village and the parking lot are not very close and will burn some of your energy.
  • Grip work needs work blah, blah, blah, the usual lesson I learn but don’t seem to work on enough.
  • The obstacles at the Boneyard are tough, means the Wilderness race will be tough.
