Race Build-Up: Red Deer Spartan Sprint 2017

4-0-300 Blog 047

Coming off my best sprint distance race to date at the X Warrior Challenge, I was really looking forward to building off those results and setting an even faster time in Red Deer which historically has been my fastest venue. However, I said was, I had been doing well in my running training but completely fell off my running in the last two weeks, having done 0 runs. Between kids and an insane work schedule I wasn’t able to find time to get my runs done without cutting down to maybe 5 and half of sleep which for my body just doesn’t work. Now the bright side is I’ve been on my feet more than usual even for me, which from what I’ve read is at least a better start than if I worked in a seated deskbound position so hopefully that makes up for of what I’ve missed. I’ve have been able to stay on track with my strength work so it’s only going to be the running I’m worried about. I feel like if I’m able to pace myself well (which is usually a problem) that I can post a time I’m satisfied with, and really at this point that’s win. Also found lately some of my fastest training runs have been after taking a bit of break so again being optimistic that will be a good omen.

I’m also trying to keep in mind that Red Deer is a ‘B’ race to me this year and my focus is in 3 weeks for the Calgary Sprint so treating this race as just a really good training run also helps me to keep focused on putting in a great effort. Now to do one last mobility session, smash out another shift at work, pack up the cooler and head up the QE2 in the morning. I’ll let you know how it goes later this week.
